Who is KEEN and what will happen with the money I raise?
Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN) San Francisco, is a volunteer non-profit organization that improves the health and self-esteem of children and youth with disabilities through providing year round non-competitive sports and recreational programs. Every child enrolled in a KEEN program (Sports I, Sports II, Basketball, and KEENquatics) is given one-on-one support through a trained volunteer. The proceeds from TREK for a Change will help to keep the kids playing all year long for free! Learn more about KEEN here!
How much do I have to raise – is there a minimum amount?
The minimum pledge requirement for our Trekking Adventures is $900 & our Camping Trips require a $500 pledge. The Trekking Adventures are meant to encourage folks to push themselves, both from a giving back and personal goal perspective. Our Camping Trips are designed for individuals ready for a challenge, but not quite prepared for a trek. There will be day-hikes incorporated into the Camping Trips from the “beginner to advanced” level so that you can set your own pace!
Do you require a registration fee?
Yes, we ask that you please pay a $35 registration fee when you sign up. This will guarantee your spot on a trip. Please note that Trekking Adventures are limited to 12 people and Camping Trips are set at 25. Registration is on a first-come, first serve basis. If you want to sign up with a group of friends, give us a call first to make sure we have enough room to accommodate everyone. Paying the registration fee indicates that you have committed to raising the minimum pledge amount and understand that you will be responsible for the difference between what you raise and the minimum. There will be an agreement form to sign as well.
Are there any incentives if I raise funds above my minimum pledge amount?
Yes! Not only will you be helping even more kids with disabilities experience the joys of childhood, but you will also receive an awesome TREK for a Change fleece if you raise $500 over your minimum pledge amount.
Is there a fundraising deadline?
Yes – your fundraising efforts should begin immediately after you’re signed up. You will have 60 days after the event to finish collecting your money.
What happens if I do not raise the minimum pledge amount?
When you sign up to do TREK for a Change, you are committed to raising the minimum pledge. You will be charged the remaining balance after the fundraising deadline.
I’ve never fundraised before – what exactly do I do?
Don’t worry! We’re here to help you along the way and will provide you a wealth of information regarding various ways to ask for money. You will have your very own fundraising page where friends and family can directly donate to you on-line. This will also help you track your total amount raised. We will be keeping a record too, so you can always check with us as well.
What gear will I need?
We will provide a gear list and you will also participate in a gear clinic a few weeks before the event to make sure you have everything you will need. TREK for a Change will take care of providing all group gear including tents, tarps, stoves and water purifiers. The rest will be up to the individual participant to purchase, borrow or rent.
Can I rent gear?
Yes! Many local sports stores offer reasonable prices on gear rental. We will provide you with several options in the area when you sign up. Some places do require advance notice, but we will give you a suggested time-line on securing it.
Is there a fitness requirement?
Trekking is a physically strenuous activity and individuals should be in good health to participate. Our Camping Trips can be as hard or easy as you like and are the recommended option for individuals not accustomed to long-distance hiking. We will take a group practice hike to determine the fitness level of participants and reserve the right to ask an individual to modify or switch their trip if need be.
Do you provide food or transportation?
No. Due to various regulations, TREK for a Change is not able to provide food or transportation. We will provide a list of food recommendations for you. Transportation must be arranged separately and is the sole responsibility of the participant.
Should I do any sort of training ahead of time?
When you sign up, you will receive a self-guiding training packet and calendar to help you get ready for your trip.
What is your cancellation policy?
Once you have paid the registration fee and commit to raising the minimum pledge amount, you are required to fulfill your financial obligation. By signing up, you are reserving very limited space and we unfortunately cannot make an exception to this rule.
Who leads the trips?
The Trekking Adventures / Day Hikes are all led by volunteer leaders that have had at least 5 or more years of experience long-distance hiking and are trained in basic first-aid.
